The Equation to Workplace Happiness

The Equation to Workplace Happiness

Passion + Purpose = Higher Energy, Higher Performance, Love for What You Do

From a very young age, we’re often told to “follow your dreams” or to “do something you’re passionate about.” But, this isn’t always the best advice. Doing what you love doesn’t always work out, and sometimes we fall out of love with our work.

In a recent study of over 5,000 individuals, author Morten T. Hansen uncovered that those who add purpose to what they’re passionate about at their jobs, tend to bring more energy to the workplace, perform better, and ultimately continue to love what they do.

This equation of adding purpose to passion is what Hansen calls “matching.” He explains that “while passion is ‘doing what you love,’ purpose is ‘doing what contributes,’ which can lead to higher workplace satisfaction."

Some may think that this sort of “matching” only exists in certain industries, but while researching, Hansen uncovered that nearly every industry or occupation reported having passion and purpose at their jobs.

So how can you achieve workplace happiness? Simply try to cultivate more purpose mixed with passion where you already are — chances are this will lead to a renewed sense of why you took the job in the first place.

The Bottom Line:

You can’t just pursue what you’re passionate about if there’s no purpose behind it. Satisfaction with your work won’t last long without both passion and purpose.
